On a well-prepared (gessoed) white panel,
the Old Master began his drawing with charcoal.
To fix the drawing, he took it up again
with a fine brush (or a pen) dipped in diluted Indian ink.
When the ink was perfectly dry, he removed the charcoal
by gently stroking the drawing with the barbs of his pen.
